It doesn’t matter if you set out to photograph wildlife, such as on a safari or trip to the zoo, or if you happen to stumble upon them randomly while exploring your current destination. It is not easy to capture animals in their natural habitat. They won’t smile at you for selfies Manu National Park Peru. They don’t have the patience or time to wait for you unless they carry food, which is often prohibited in most places.
You can do some things to make your wildlife photos even more impressive. We’re talking about Facebook cover photos here, and we mean “brilliant.” These are the ones you will show off and pretend that you took entirely by accident, but it was a concerted effort to get them… Let’s get going!
You won’t be able to get close enough to most animals (trust me, it’s happened). So it would be best if you had a zoom lens to take great photos from a distance. You don’t have to spend a lot on a zoom lens. Companies like Sigma and Tamron make affordable lenses that can be used.
Once you have mastered the hardware, it is time to start trying to understand the behavior of the animal that you are trying to photograph. While I don’t think you have to be the next David Attenborough, it is essential to understand the animal’s behavior. Some animals are sluggish and will wait for the photo opportunity. Others are constantly moving and are always on the go. You can predict the behavior of an animal and be able to pre-empt it. The best way to capture the “perfect shot” is to know your animal subject.
Although it is great to take photos of an entire animal, the most compelling images are the ones where you zoom in on the subject and capture details that might otherwise go unnoticed. (See why I started with this tip? Another technique is to capture more background and animals. This is the opposite of the one described above. This is especially useful if the subject is only in your photo. You’d be amazed at the results if you played around with it after your detailed shot. Wide shots can tell a larger story and are especially useful if the animal interacts with its habitat as it would typically without you.
New cameras make it easier to focus on your subject matter. It’s easy to tap the area of your screen you want to focus on with new cameras. Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to use them. My 2008 camera didn’t do this, nor does my 2012-ish (2012). Learning how to focus your camera correctly is not an easy task. Sometimes it takes trial and error. It is essential to learn all you can before you go out and put your skills to the test.
